What A Beautiful Tan! Did You Just Ski Aspen?

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Cecil Taylor Ski tans are in and skiing is big business. Last year, just the State of Colorado enjoyed a record 12.53 million skiing days and took in some 2.5 billion dollars, and they are expecting even more this skiing season. That is big and still growing. This winter there will be millions of healthy, athletic, beautiful people sporting ski tans during the winter skiing season. The rich and famous spend small fortunes to ski at exotic locations such as Aspen. And, when they return home they show off those magnificent ski tans to the envious pale people. Wouldn’t you like to belong to the upper class and show off your personal Aspen ski tan to your friends this winter? Just where did this tanned skin envy come from? Less than a century ago - pale skin was upheld as the mark of the upper class. Pale skin then separated the elite from dark tanned farm workers and outdoor laborers. After all, one needed to be rich in order not to have to be employed working in the sun. Then in the post war 50’s, wealthier families began vacationing in the sun belt and returning home with beautiful tans. This changed the acceptance from pale to bronzed skin. Now wealthy means having enough money and leisure time to relax on a beach sun tanning while the pale folks labor away indoors as retail, manufacturing and office workers. In the late seventies, tanning beds came to America and the indoor tanning business exploded into a multi-billion dollar business. Tanning Salons are now seemingly outnumbered in locations only by fast food venues and convenience stores. There is no question that people enjoy getting their tans in the relaxing and much safer tanning beds of the new millennium. To drive this viewpoint home, scantily clad, full body tanned advertising models can be seen in all the media. Full body tans are wonderful for those who have the time and expendable resources to go to and enjoy their favorite tanning salon or spa. Others want to belong and want to look just as beautiful as anyone around them. But, they have to go to work to earn their income. When all the world sees them in their fully clothed working mode, their beautiful ski tan serves them just as well as a covered up full body tan. Their peers are still as jealous and full of envy as if the ski tan were a full bodied tan. When others ask about their Apen ski tan, they just tell them “Thank You.” And then they explain that Aspen is nestled high in the Elk Mountains branch of the Rockies and for good reason - has long been known as the playpen of the rich and famous. Aspen and its sister town of Snowmass Village service four major ski areas (Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, and Buttermilk.) The average snowfall for the area is 200 inches. Aspen Mountain rises above the town of Aspen, with a top elevation of 11,215 feet; a vertical drop of 3,267 feet; 673 acres of skiable area, with 76 runs and 8 lifts including one cable car line. Aspen Mountain is the premiere ski resort in the Aspen area, catering to advanced skiers with difficult runs. (Terrain:: No beginner trails; intermediate, 48 percent; expert, 52 percent.) Aspen Highlands has 790 acres of skiable area with a vertical drop of 3,635 feet. There are 131 runs and 5 lifts. (Terrain: beginners, 18 percent; intermediate, 30 percent; expert 52 percent.) Buttermilk is a small resort in the Aspen-Snowmass resort complex. Buttermilk Ski Resort has 420 acres of skiable area with a vertical drop of 2,030 feet, 41 runs and 7 lifts. Buttermilk caters heavily to snowboarders Buttermilk as the world’s longest terrain park with two full miles of features including a super pipe, more than 30 rails, and a beginner sections. Also, Buttermilk heavily caters to beginner skiers with slopes that are friendly to newcomers to the sport, and is home to a world-renowned ski school. (Terrain: beginners, 35 percent; intermediate 39 percent; expert 26 percent.) Snowmass ranks among the top 10 resorts in America in size, and it’s the second-largest in Colorado (after Vail). It covers more than 3,100 acres of skiable area with a vertical drop of 4,406 feet the longest vertical drop in the United States, 84 runs and 20 lifts. Snowmass also offers Cross-country skiing, the first run of the day tours, naturalist-guided ski/snowboard tours, powder tours and naturalist-guided snowshoe tours. For those into extreme skiing there is the Grand Traverse beginning in Crested Butte, Colorado. There one can ski over the mountains to Aspen on a perilous 12-hour journey risking avalanches and total exhaustion. The Aspen ski area is located about 220 miles West from Denver on Interstate 70 and is among the most popular ski destinations in the entire West becoming celebrity central in winter . The surrounding peaks are some of Colorado’s most breath taking and picturesque. Christmas in Aspen is especially wonderful! There are plenty of shopping opportunities to pick up that last minute gift Plus there are many retail outlets and Ashcroft Ghost Town, Silver Circle Ice Skating Rink and even Sun Dog Athletics snowshoeing. While Aspen has much to offer skiers, as well as those who enjoy the night life in a ski town, they should expect lots of crowds and lift lines on the slopes. This is the playpen of the rich and famous, and many people choose this ski vacation spot simply for that reason as well as for the great runs, nightlife and beautiful ski tans. With over 100 restaurants and many outdoor decks, one can obtain a beautiful ski tan while enjoying a fine meal outdoors. The best news of all, you do not even have to go to Aspen to get your Aspen ski tan. For less than the round trip airfare, you may well be able to purchase your own sun lamp and use it as a facial tanner in the comfort, safety and security of your own home to obtain your beautiful ski tan. And, not for just a weekend - for many years. Think of your new beautiful Aspen ski tan just like you do your hair coloring, only your beautician needs to know. Happy Ski Tanning!!! Am I in Love? (Questions of the Heart)

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Dorothy Lafrinere Do you feel your brains turn to mush as soon as cupids arrow spears your heart? Did your heart ever become your goal? Did he become your world? Do you feel the need to control him? Do you want to be his everything? Did you ever change your entire world to be with him? Did he, for you? Do you want his eyes to be only on you? Do you feel like you can never say anything right? Do you try to share your thoughts with him, only to alienate him? Do you tear your hair out every time he looks at you like you are an alien? Do you wish today was as sweet as the first day that you laid your eyes on him? Do you wish you had never heard any stories about his past? Do you wish he never heard yours? Do you expect him to read your mind? Do you think you can read his mind? Do you worry about things that he cannot even comprehend? Do you imagine his answers, when he gives you none? Do you constantly question his feelings for you? Do you question his every decision? Do you feel like a wallflower? Do you wish he would not interpret your needs for weakness? Did you grow up believing love would be safe and non confronting? Do you like the feeling of mistrust? Does he? Do you feel that you are the only one in this relationship? Did you ever think that you would feel so torn apart when you argued with someone? Did you think that you could be so hateful with someone you love so much? Did you ever look just at someone and just feel total unconditional love for them? Did you think that he too would feel incompetent during sex? Do you know that he too suffers when you look upon him with disappointment? Does he try to reach out to you in his time of need for affection and understanding? Do you turn away from him, hoping that he will turn to you? Do you feel like hiding from his eyes when you feel threatened by another female? Does he understand you at that time? Does he support you when you feel weak and failing? Do you support him? Do you allow him inside your head when all you want to do is die? Do you come home and ask him how his day was? Do you reach for him in the quiet of the night? Does he reach out for you? Does he make you feel sexy with just one look? Do you crave his touch? Does he kiss you passionately? Do you kiss him back? Do you love him with all your heart and soul? Would you die for him? Would he die for you? HMMMMMM! I know that I have definitely reached each one of you reading, with at least one of these thought provoking questions. Did you ever think such a small sweet word like LOVE could be so full of emotions and feelings? Love has so many meanings: Love means trust, even when all the cards are against you. Love means understand at all costs. Love means accept all without question. Love means allowing a stranger into your heart. Love means smiling when anyone else would frown. Love means hugging when he cries. Love means being silent when silence is needed. Love means putting his feelings first. Love means being fair. Love means expecting fairness. Love means commitment. Love means fitting together. Love means laughter. Love means partnership. Love means being independent. Love means forgiveness. Love means patience. Love means pain. Love means sacrifice. Love means supporting. Love means feeling complete. Love means never going to bed mad. Love means GIFT. If you have the gift of love, cherish it, nurture it, and treat it with respect. Never push it away, or hurt it. Never, ever abuse it, or treat it like a door mat. Embrace it. To have the gift of love is truly an inner beauty feeling. People say they love, but truly they have no clue what love is. Love can be just as painful as it can be beautiful. It can turn on you in a heartbeat. It can become your worst enemy. It can twist your world and turn it upside down, leaving you feeling alone and empty. Love is a very powerful gift. It is when one finds true love that all of the feelings, good and bad come together. That is when they are organized and compromised to make two people into one. It is when we are one that we join forces against the world and battle together. Sometimes it feels easier to go it alone, but it is the word, “alone” that really scares me. I would rather risk it all with someone, then to be alone. To say yes to the questions above tells you that you have risked it and are in love! ****************************************** “I believe that we are here for each other, not against each other. What is Power of Attorney?

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Gay Redmile Power of Attorney is a legal document where one person authorizes another to act on his/her behalf. It allows that authorized person to manage business and/or financial affairs when one person is no longer able to do so. It may be required due to illness, overseas travel or mental incapacity. Why is it important to organise a Power of Attorney? Should you be considered incompetent to deal with your finances - you need somebody else to be authorised to deal with your affairs. A Power of Attorney document allows you to choose the person, with defined authority and limits if desired, the power to protect, or re-arrange, your assets. The person named in a Power of Attorney to act on your behalf is referred to as your “agent” or “attorney-in-fact.” With a valid Power of Attorney, your agent can take any action permitted in the document. Often your agent must present the actual document to invoke the power. If you do not have a Power of Attorney and become unable to manage your personal or business affairs, it may become necessary for a court to appoint one or more people to act on your behalf. Usually referred to as guardians, conservators, or committees. If a court proceeding is required then you may not have the ability to choose the person who will act for you. By executing a Power of Attorney for Finances (also referred to as a Durable Power of Attorney for Finances) you can decide who you want to make decisions about your legal and financial matters. You can be very specific about what actions you are authorizing your partner (or agent) to make, including which accounts he/she has access to and the types of decisions he/she can make. A Power of Attorney for Health Care allows decisions to be made specifically on what kind of treatment the person wants, based on their medical condition. A Living Will in some ways duplicates the information in the Power of Attorney for Health Care. It is a separate document that lets your family members know what type of care you do or do not want to receive should you become terminally ill or comatosed. It can also cover situations in which a person may survive but is not capable of making their own medical decisions. It can be a directive stating that there is to be no heroic measures to keep the person alive when there is no realistic prospect of any meaningful recovery. An Enduring Power of Attorney is a legal document authorizing a named person or people to act on your behalf. Subject to certain conditions it continues in force until death. Guardianship is a legal relationship whereby a probate court gives a person (the guardian) the power to make personal decisions for another (the ward). A family member or a friend can initiate the proceedings by filing a petition in the probate court where the person lives. A medical examination by a licensed doctor may be necessary to establish the person’s condition. A court of law will then determine whether that person is unable to meet the essential requirements for his/her health and safety. As long as you are alive you have the power to revoke the Power of Attorney. To do this you must contact your attorney-in-fact to advise that the Power of Attorney has been revoked. You can also specify a date that the Power of Attorney will expire. A Power of Attorney is also important for unmarried couples, who live together, when a partner becomes incapacitated and unable to make decisions. When this occurs the law usually assigns the incapacitated person’s next of kin as the decision maker. With a Power of Attorney, unmarried couples can give their partners the power to make decisions. Gay Redmile is the webmaster of several finance and investment sites. Having recently been named as Power of Attorney for her father - she realised how important it was for people to be aware of the implications of not having one in place. Finding the Sales Job You Want

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Jacques Werth I have hired and managed many hundreds of salespeople. In most cases, we spent a great deal of time and money recruiting them. Those few who called me directly almost always got an interview, even if we had to send them a plane ticket. The reason is simple: Sales managers want salespeople who are smart enough to apply their prospecting and selling skills to finding a job. Understand that regardless of economic conditions, every large company, and many medium sized ones, have a multitude of job openings. Getting those jobs filled by suitable candidates is a long and tedious process, complicated by miles of organizational red tape. Managers who need to fill positions are often desperately trying to cope. The fastest way to find the job you want, with a company you want to join, is to do it differently from everyone else. Find the companies - maybe only 2 or 3 percent of the companies you would like to join - that have a current need for your expertise. Find them before the job you want gets filled. Here’s how to sell your way into the job you want: 1. Develop your list of target companies. Do a search on the Internet or at the library, and make a list of all of the companies that look attractive to you. You’re looking for companies likely to employ people with your skill set. Make your list as big as possible - at least two hundred potential employers. 2. Design a “High Probability Prospecting offer.” Include the following information: a. Your name; b. A short comprehensive description of your capabilities; c. Two outstanding functions that you can accomplish; d. A request for an appointment. The prospecting offer must contain no more that 45 words. Example: a. This is Jane Salesperson. b. I’m an experienced, conscientious salesperson. c. I can find and make appointments with prospects that want your types of products and services and close most of them. d. Is that the kind of salesperson you want for your department? 3. Get the contact information of the ‘decision makers’. Call all of the companies on your list and get the names of the department managers that you want to call. While most receptionists won’t give out that kind of information, you can usually get connected to someone in the sales department who will look it up for you. It works to tell them “I need your help.” 4. Call all of the managers on your list and present your prospecting offer (number 2 above). If the manager says he/she doesn’t need anyone at this time, ask, “Do you know of anyone who does?” If not, say, “Okay, good bye.” If the manager asks you to send your resume, say, “I don’t put my resume in the mail. I’ll bring it with me if you want to meet. So, do you want to meet me?” If the manager tells you to contact HR, say, “Okay, good bye.” Don’t waste your time contacting HR. Don’t send them your resume unless you are the rat that is sure to win the race. If the manager says “Yes,” you say, “When?” However, be prepared to handle a preliminary telephone interview. Be prepared with a list of questions you want answered before you will commit to the appointment, also. 5. Don’t accept the first job offer you get - unless it’s the best position you could hope for. It’s generally better to ask for a couple of weeks to think it over: People who use this system usually get from 3 to 5 job offers within a month! You CAN find the sales job you want! Apply the principles of High Probability Prospecting to your job search: Define and target your market (employers likely to need your skill set), design a High Probability Prospecting offer (offer your expertise, using 2 of your skills as features), and qualify the potential employer (they either need you now, or they don’t). If you diligently follow the process, you will achieve positive results - the sales job you want, at a company you’d like to work for. Jacques Werth, High Probability Selling - All rights reserved. Lose Weight by Ending the Struggle with Yourself

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP Self talk is key. You can stop the struggle by ending the self talk that supports the struggle. You’ve heard it before–what you focus on is what you receive. Nowhere is that more true than in believing it is a struggle to stay healthy. Who would want to be healthy if it’s such a horrible struggle? Yet, you’ve probably seen people who are fit, healthy and happy; you might even know a few. They seem to bounce when they walk. They’re animated and excited about life, and if you asked them they wouldn’t say it’s a struggle. “What do you mean,” they’d ask? Struggle? Nah, I’m just doing what I want,” and they’d mean it. Forget the notion that you have to struggle and eat celery sticks for dinner. It’s not true. Despite the fact that you’ve lost the weight before and gained it right back, despite your belief that you can’t even look at food without gaining weight. All of those thoughts are just more beliefs that are keeping you stuck. What you focus on becomes your reality. What if You Never Got Hungry? I’m a prime example. I don’t struggle. Some days I eat a lot. Some days not so much. Some days very little. Yesterday I ate my usual breakfast and then, strangely, I just didn’t feel hungry all day. I felt different somehow. Not ill, but I just didn’t want to eat. “What’s up with this?,” I thought to myself, but I decided to just ride it out and see what happened. Well, I’m here to tell you that nothing happened. I lived to tell another story, see another day. Nothing fell from the sky and the world didn’t stop spinning because I didn’t eat much yesterday. It was just another day. Today I ate a few handfuls of malted milk balls. No big deal to me, but I know many of you are thinking, “I’d never be able to eat just some, I’d have to eat them all,” and that is my point. Telling yourself you can’t eat “some,” or as many as you want, but that you believe you’d be compelled to eat them all, no matter how many there were is a belief that is keeping you stuck. I don’t believe that to be true, and so, for me it is not true. Changing a Fundamental Belief with EFT How do you change a fundamental belief? You start with basic EFT using it for everything that comes up, even though it may not seem related. Every worry, fear, doubt, struggle. Use it on everything, and those issues that do make a difference in your eating will start dissolving away. Try it - what have you got to lose but some weight? What’s EFT? It’s Emotional Freedom Training and it’s taking the world by storm as an easy, self administered practice to help reduce or eliminate the emotional issues that keep us stuck. Free information available at EmoFree.com. I added EFT to my toolkit as soon as I learned it because it’s easy to learn, easy to use, and it’s effective. To learn EFT specifically for weight loss, get The Daily Bites (see resource box below). Remember those healthy folks I mentioned earlier? They don’t view how they eat or how much they exercise as a struggle at all. They are active because they want to be active, and they eat foods that make them feel great. They probably eat a lot of the same things you eat too–I’m talking about everyday people who have learned to feel good about themselves. None of them are perfect–despite the common belief that there is some “perfect” body, it’s just not true. Everyone has a wrinkle here, extra skin there. Every single one of us is flawed in some way or another. It’s what makes us unique. Choose to focus on the benefits, rather than the sacrifice Everything worthwhile takes effort–having a baby comes to mind. All mothers will likely agree that childbirth has its down side, but the ultimate reward makes it all worth it (yes, some women feel great while pregnant, but I wasn’t one of them). Otherwise, everyone would be a single child. ;-) Think about it. Becoming a professional musician or baseball player comes to many who played Little League and started practicing the piano when they were very small. Tiger Woods was only 3 or 4-years old when his father first taught him to hold a golf club. He also showed him videos of professional golfers when he sat in his high chair eating his dinner (his dad was a little odd, I’d say). Woods started playing golf at such a young age that he literally grew up playing the game. He wanted to play. His father undoubtedly drove him to work harder at it than most children would, but he had to have a strong drive of his own or he never would have made it. But what if he’d hit 6-year’s old and suddenly said to himself, “I don’t want to practice. I hate golf. I wanna play with my friends. I’ll never be any good at his stupid game.” Maybe things would have turned out differently. The bottom line though is he did what he did because he wanted to (his parents obviously had a lot to do with it too), and the reward? Today he’s considered the most gifted golfer of all time, and to what does he attribute his success? The practice and discipline of his mind. He learned from one of his primary coaches to harness the power of his mind–using NLP and hypnosis techniques (and likely he’s since started to use EFT as well). Learn to use your mind to focus on the results you want - or conversely focus on avoiding what you do not want, and you’ll win your prize, loving the process, instead of dreading it. How to Get Started Starting from right now, get a box of toothpicks, matchsticks, marbles, small rocks or twigs from the yard. Something small enough you can carry it with you. Whenever you catch yourself starting to say anything negative, “I don’t want to …, or, “I hate …,” or “I’m gonna strangle …” Anything negative you catch yourself saying or beginning to say, whether towards yourself or someone else doesn’t matter. Start noticing how often you’re feeding yourself negative energy. Then, apply the STOP technique as soon as you realize you are doing it, you yell (to yourself) STOP, and immediately replace what you were saying with something else. Here’s what I mean: “I hate having to wash the … STOP … it’s nice getting a chance to stretch and bend while the car gets cleaned.” Yes, it’s stiff and forced, at first. Anytime you attempt to change a behavior it will feel forced. Just allow yourself to learn to change your self talk, and that early discomfort with the process will pass. It will start to be fun to “catch” yourself. As soon as you start doing it, you’ll realize how often you’re been feeding yourself negativity, and you’ll also see how easily you can change that habit. Positive people tend to be happier people. I’m not suggesting you get a personality change, but I am suggesting, if you ultimately want to drop some weight and never see it again that you change your thinking from how much you’ll have to struggle to how much better you’re going to feel. Elder Care Business Owners Should Not Pay Referral Fees

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Barbara Mascio A ruling, on the books since 1972, called the Safe Harbor Provisions states, in part, “the federal anti-kickback law’s main purpose is to protect patients and the federal health care programs from fraud and abuse by curtailing the corrupting influence of money on health care decisions”… it goes on to say, … “anyone who knowingly and willfully receives or pays anything of value to influence the referral of federal health care program business, including Medicare and Medicaid, can be held accountable for a felony. See http://oig.hhs.gov/fraud/docs/safeharborregulations/safefs.htm Violations of the law are punishable by up to five years in prison, criminal fines up to $25,000, administrative civil money penalties up to $50,000, and exclusion from participation in federal health care programs.” A referral service serves both the senior and the elder care service provider in this manner: Service providers register with the referral service A senior searching for a service is asked for their location The referral company now emails, phones or faxes each service within the desired zip code to provide you with this referral. (You are provided the name, phone number and address of the senior) You and your staff quickly respond - you know if you get there first, you have a higher chance of contracting with the senior The senior now receives multiple sales calls from nice people who all say the same thing, “You should choose my company because we are the best” You contract with the senior The referral company now sends you a bill. The bill is normally based on the dollar amount you charge the senior. (Example: An assisted living facility that charges $3,000 per month will typically owe the referral service a fee of $1,500. Their neighbor, the assisted living facility across the street charges $1,500 per month and will owe the same referral service a fee for $750.00 for the same client, same service) Representatives of referral companies normally earn commissions. This can also pose a concern. If a family’s income depended on earning a high commission, the temptation may be there to direct a senior to a service that a. Charges more b. Where the staff has a history of ‘closing’ the sale. If your business is searching for a legal method to connect with the senior market, see http://www.qualityeldercare.com Searching for a service? The Art of Non-Verbal Communication

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Mihaela Lica When you talk to your business partners, employees, journalists, spouse or friends, you certainly hear what they say, but can you also hear what lies beneath the words? Have you ever had the feeling that someone is trying to fool you, or that the ones you were talking to dont give a damn on what you have to say? Guess what? Your feeling was right. In a face-to-face communication words do the talking and the body sends out the message. If you take a careful look at the gestures, body pose and facial expressions displayed by your interlocutor youll certainly be able to understand his/her real feelings. On the other hand, if a person is tired, nervous, worried or has any other negative feelings (for personal reasons) the gap between the verbal message and the non-verbal signals is often misleading, especially if you cannot interpret body language correctly. Reading body language is not an easy task. Women, who are more perceptive than men, are able to notice body language warnings faster and interpret them (often unconsciously) quite accurately. When a man is lying to his wife she is almost always able to tell, because she sees the signs: his Adams apple jumps, he is not able to look her in the eyes, he is faking a smile, he is rubbing his hand for no reason, his body bends away, etc. You shouldnt read each gesture separately. To make sense of what you see, you need to take the signs as a whole. Words have deeper and more accurate meanings within a context. So do gestures. The moment you are able to make sense of gestures youll be able to tell whether your dialogue partner agrees with you or not. You should always read gestures in the context. People do cross their arms when they have negative feelings towards a certain issue, but they also cross their arms to show superiority or because they are cold. Reading body language is an art, but youll be able to master it in time. All you need to do is to learn the meaning of each gesture and then start looking at people, seeing what they do and translate their feelings. The purpose of learning body language should not be reduced to reading others. Body language is the key to good communication. By learning it, you will know what negative non-verbal signs to eliminate from your behavior. You will not be able to fake body language there are micro signals that sooner or later will give you away. But you will be able to communicate clearly, without sending out the wrong messages by accident. When You Say you’re Sorry, Mean It

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By George Wood Just saying sorry when you have done something wrong or hurt another persons feelings is not enough to rectify the hurt you might have caused. When we are arguing or trying desperately to prove our point, we sometimes unintentionally hurt the person who is listening to us. As soon as we realize our mistake, we immediately say sorry and think that our duty has been fulfilled. We want things to be as normal as they were before. But that is not possible if were not genuinely sorry. You say youre sorry just to keep the relationship on track. If you dont mean it chances are the other person is never going to forgive you. Often people keep grudges in their hearts against other people just because of small matters. If you dont clarify things on the spot they might come back at some point later in your life and turn out to be some occasions where you made a mistake and did not resolve it properly before moving on. Whenever you apologize make sure you mean it. Dont bring in third parties to talk to the person you have offended. Always handle your personal matters yourself, especially if the person you have hurt is your lover or a dear friend. If you think saying sorry in person is not going to be that much effective, then write a letter, buy a card or simply email your friend and tell them your true feelings without hesitation. Tell them that you will never make such a mistake again. Also make sure that the time you have selected to apologize is the right time. If the person you have hurt is not in a position to listen to you then dont press them. Give them sometime to think and then send an apology note. Accept the fact that you were wrong when you hurt their feelings and promise that you are going to be extremely careful in future. A genuine apology is the one that sets things straight between two people and neither of them keeps a grudge. If you think that you were right then wait for a little while before realizing your next action. Think again about your argument. You do owe an apology to a person if you used harsh words or said something you shouldnt have said. But before saying that youre sorry make up your mind and then honestly tell the other person that what happened was not right and that you two should try to set things straight. Research in Social Sciences: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Verena Veneeva Research in social sciences largely depends on measurements and analysis and interpretation of numerical as well as non numerical data. Quantitative research methods focus on statistical approaches and qualitative methods are based on content analysis, comparative analysis, grounded theory, and interpretation (Strauss, 1990). Quantitative methods emphasise on objective measurements and numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires or surveys and qualitative research focuses on understanding social phenomena through interviews, personal comments etc. Quantitative and qualitative methods are studied within the context of positivistic and phenomenological paradigms (Papers4you.com, 2006). The applications of research methods could be studied in the context of business and management or in social psychology to understand a social process. Some of the basic tools for qualitative or quantitative research are related to data collection methods which can be case studies, questionnaires or interviews (Simon et al, 1985). Research methods in management focus on leadership studies and leadership issues are examined in accordance with contingency theory and organisational theory. The effects of leadership are best studied with the help of qualitative or quantitative research methods and analyses of questionnaires sent to participants in management positions. Research methods are however focused not just on management issues but also on social process for example a study on the interaction between age, physical exercise and gender. Some disadvantages and possible flaws of such methods may be related to abuse or misuse of interview techniques, inadequacy of data collection methods and reliability of data. The methodological approach and data collection techniques are important in research and form an important aspect of study (Simon, 1985). The case study approach is especially useful in analysis of business environments and perceptual mapping techniques are used for marketing research. Focus groups and surveys are used as other preferred methods of data collection, especially within business environments (Papers4you.com, 2006). Interpretive research can be considered as an important aspect of qualitative analysis, although as with all qualitative data, subjective bias can be a deterrent in the validity of such approaches. In studying research methods, it would be necessary to highlight the differences between qualitative and quantitative methods although it has also been argued that an integrated approach to social analysis could close in the gap between quantitative and qualitative methods and both these methods could be used for social research studies. In fact there may not be a specified correct method of research as each method seems to have its strengths and weaknesses and these factors should be examined carefully before a particular method is selected or used for studying a social process. 7 Reasons To Promote Your Business By Offering a Needs Analysis

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Charles Brown At the heart of every successful marketing strategy is a reason you give for potential clients to contact you now. Offering potential clients a Needs Analysis may be that reason and just may be the perfect way to attract new clients. Here are 7 reasons you should consider offering a Needs Analysis as part of your business model: Too often, people read advertisements or marketing materials and think, Thats good to know, now if I ever need these people, I know how to reach them.” But a Needs Analysis gives them a reason to contact you. It represents a substantial benefit to potential clients in terms of knowledge and ideas to improve some significant area of their lives or business. Most people will be reluctant to make a major commitment with your business, unless they have a prior relationship with you. A needs analysis gives them a way to stick a toe into the water without incurring a big expense or making a major commitment. It allows them to sample your work, knowledge and expertise for either no cost or a very low cost. A Needs Analysis is probably something you are already doing if you are in a service business or if your knowledge and expertise adds value to the purchase of your products. If you are now conducting a consultative interview and make proposals or recommendations when you begin a new client relationship, you only need to formalize this process and offer it as a separate package. You can either offer a Needs Analysis free or for a small fee. I recommend you start offering it free to generate qualified leads, and then start charging a small fee. This way, the Needs Analysis can be a separate income stream for your business. A Needs Analysis gives you a way to give your potential clients a substantial benefit right away. Always make sure the recommendations and ideas you offer are truly valuable to the potential client, even if you conduct them for free. Dont be afraid they will take your ideas and go somewhere else. It will happen, but not often enough to offset the new business you bring in. A Needs Analysis helps you to qualify potential clients. You will waste less time following up with unqualified and uninterested prospects, and will be able to spend more time on people who can make up your A list. Offering a Needs Analysis puts you in a position to gather a lot of information about your market and the general needs of prospects. You will be able to use some of this information to write case histories about the needs and circumstances of specific individuals (be sure to get their permission before you write up a case history). Another way you can use this information is as a research study. After you have compiled a significant amount of information, you might announce your findings to the media with a press release. For example, your release might say, Two-thirds of local 55 year olds have under-funded their projected retirement savings needs by $100,000 or more. Or, Only 20% of local farm owners have enough life insurance to keep their farms going after their families pay estate taxes. Publishing studies like this positions you as an expert in your field and can put you in the rolodex of many local journalists. Let me conclude with a bonus reason. Too often we business owners spend our time pursuing prospects who lead us on and encourage us, but will never take action. Getting someone to commit to participating in a Needs Analysis is an excellent way to test the interest level of a prospect. It requires action on their part, which reveals to you whether they are interested or just wasting your time. freelance copywriter, writing web content, copywriting tips, ghost writer COPYRIGHT(C)2006, Charles Brown.
